Quality inspection standards and methods for plastic container mould

Plastic container mould quality inspection should start before the tool leaves the factory. For buyers of food containers, lunch boxes, lids, sauce cups, and thin-wall packaging, inspection is the step that confirms whether the mould can produce stable parts under real production conditions.

A useful inspection standard covers the mould itself and the molded samples. The mould must match the agreed drawing, steel, hot runner, cooling layout, and spare-part plan. The samples must match the functional requirements for sealing, stacking, filling, appearance, and cycle time.

Dimensional and Functional Sample Checks

Container samples should be measured for length, width, height, diameter, wall thickness, rim size, lid fit, stack height, and part weight. For precision packaging, buyers may also need to define tolerance ranges for sealing surfaces, hinge or clasp details, and anti-theft buckle features.

Functional checks are just as important as dimensional checks. A container that measures correctly can still fail if the lid does not seal, the rim deforms after ejection, the box sticks during stacking, or the wall becomes too weak after lightweighting. Inspection should therefore include sample assembly, stacking, drop handling, and filling simulation where relevant.

Surface, Gate, and Demolding Inspection

The visible surface should be checked for flash, sink marks, flow lines, burn marks, air traps, scratches, oil stains, and uneven gloss. Transparent or semi-transparent containers need stricter review because small marks become more visible to the end customer.

Gate marks and parting lines should be acceptable for the packaging use. Demolding should be smooth without pulling, whitening, deformation, or ejector damage. If demolding is unstable during sampling, the mould factory may need to adjust draft angle, polishing, surface treatment, ejection balance, or cooling before shipment.

Mould Structure and Tooling Checks

A mould acceptance review should confirm steel grade, hardness, cavity numbering, guide components, slides or lifters, water circuit marking, hot runner wiring, temperature zones, and spare parts. For hot runner container moulds, buyers should check that the manifold, heaters, thermocouples, and nozzle areas are accessible for maintenance.

Cooling inspection matters because container moulds often fail in production through deformation or long cycle time rather than visible steel defects. Water path pressure testing, flow confirmation, and trial records help show whether the mould can support the agreed production speed.

Inspection Tools and Reports Buyers Should Request

Common inspection tools include calipers, micrometers, height gauges, roughness meters, hardness testers, coordinate measuring machines, and visual inspection under proper lighting. For complex containers, CMM reports can help confirm critical geometry before the buyer signs off on the tool.

The supplier should provide sample photos, dimension reports, trial parameters, resin information, cycle time records, part weight data, mould maintenance notes, and packing details. These records become the reference point if the mould is later transferred to another machine or another production site.

Final Acceptance Before Shipment

Before final acceptance, run the mould under the agreed machine conditions and inspect samples from all cavities. The buyer should confirm that cavity-to-cavity variation is controlled, the part meets the drawing, and the mould can run repeatedly without abnormal noise, leakage, sticking, or flash growth.

A clear plastic container mould inspection process protects both buyer and supplier. It reduces dispute risk, shortens commissioning time, and gives the production team a practical baseline for stable container manufacturing.
